Preparing for Shmita: A Mindful Elul Workshop

Join The Tasman Center for Jewish Creativity and Hazon for a kick off workshop in preparation for the Jewish New Year. Every year, at the end of the summer, we have a special time in the Jewish calendar in the month of Elul to prepare for Rosh Hashanah. This is a time to reflect on the year we’ve been through and set intentions for the year ahead. This coming year in the Jewish calendar is a Shmita year, which comes every seven years, as a chance for fields to lie fallow for rest and renewal in the ancient agricultural system in the land of Israel. In our modern lives, we have an opportunity to observe the Shmita cycle symbolically - as a mindful, creative, reflective spiritual practice. Observing Shmita in this way gives us a chance for personal or professional rest and resetting, to reflect on the past seven years of growth in our lives and to mindfully transition into the next seven year cycle of growth that is to come.

The workshop will include:

  • Learning and discussion about the Jewish calendar, the seven year Shmita cycle and the month of Elul

  • Guided meditation (no experience necessary)

  • Creative expression

  • Ritual and Intention setting for the Jewish New Year

  • A digital copy of our Mindful Shmita Workbook with creative activities for you to use throughout the Shmita year

Participants in the workshop will also be invited to participate in a year-long Mindful Shmita cohort to share their experiences of their Shmita practice throughout the year.

Tickets are offered at a sliding scale $18-54
